Pearled Barley: export from Canada to ASEAN

Pearled barley is a processed food product: the hull and part of the bran are abraded away, and how far that process is taken (the pearling degree) determines colour, cooking time and nutritional profile. Lightly pearled product retains more fibre and cooks slower; heavily pearled is whiter and faster.

Buyers frequently specify only pearled barley and receive whichever degree the processor runs by default. State the degree, or state the cooking time you need and let the supplier match it.

Beyond that the terms are size uniformity, colour, moisture and broken-kernel tolerance.

Canadian production and processing sit on the prairies, and supply is steadier than the raw crop implies because processing buffers the harvest. End uses across Southeast Asia run from soups and porridges to beverage and prepared-food manufacture, each sensitive to a different pearling degree.

Pearling is a processing step that moves the product out of the raw grain classification in most schedules. That change is worth confirming before quoting, because the duty position on processed grain is frequently different from the raw crop.
