Feed Barley: export from Canada to ASEAN

Feed barley is what malting barley becomes when it fails selection, plus the acreage grown for feed from the outset. It is bought on energy, protein, test weight and price, with a considerably looser specification than the malting trade.

The practical point for a compounder is that barley substitutes into a ration against corn and wheat on a relative-value basis rather than being specified in isolation. Test weight is the usual proxy for energy density and is the term worth contracting on.

Canadian supply is substantial and concentrated in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Because feed barley volume is partly a residual of malting selection, availability in a given year moves with malting quality: a poor malting year puts more barley into the feed channel.

Specify test weight, moisture, foreign material and any mycotoxin limits your destination applies, since those limits differ by market.
