Malting Barley: export from Canada to ASEAN

Malting barley is the most specification-driven grain on this site, and the reason is that a maltster is buying a living seed rather than a bulk commodity. Germination energy and capacity, protein within a narrow band, plumpness, and freedom from pre-germination all have to hold, and a lot that fails any one of them is feed barley, at a materially different price.

Variety acceptance is the gate most buyers meet first. Maltsters and brewers work from accepted variety lists, and a barley that performs well agronomically but is not on the relevant list is not malting barley for that customer, regardless of its analysis.

Canadian production is concentrated in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and selection happens after harvest: a proportion of each crop makes malting grade and the rest goes to feed. That selection is why availability at a tight specification is not guaranteed by acreage alone.

For a buyer, specify variety, germination, protein range and screenings together, and agree the sampling basis. For an exporter, the honest conversation about what a season selected out of is worth more than a contract that cannot be filled.
