Split Yellow Peas: export from Canada to ASEAN

Split yellow peas are whole yellow peas decorticated and split, and the quality question is almost entirely about the splitting rather than the crop. Split percentage, the proportion of whole and broken pieces, colour consistency and dust content are what separate a good container from a poor one, and they are functions of the processor, not the field.

That has a practical consequence: two exporters offering the same nominal product from the same crop year can deliver materially different goods depending on their processing line and their sorting tolerances. A buyer who is comparing offers on price alone without a written split and defect specification is not comparing the same thing.

End uses across Southeast Asia run from dal and soup manufacture to snack processing, and each is sensitive to a different attribute: cooking time for prepared foods, colour for retail, dust and fines for extruded products.

Ask for the split tolerance, the maximum fines and the colour standard in writing, and agree how they will be verified at load. Canadian processors are generally comfortable working to a stated tolerance; the problem arises when nobody states one.
