Pinto Beans: export from Canada to ASEAN

Pinto beans are bought on size, the characteristic mottled colour, and hydration behaviour. The largest single commercial risk is darkening: pintos lose their mottling and go uniformly brown with age and warm storage, which does not affect eating quality but does affect what a consumer will buy off a shelf.

That makes crop year and storage history genuinely commercial terms rather than technicalities, particularly for retail packing. Ask both.

Canadian production sits mainly in Manitoba, Alberta and Ontario. Origin province matters for routing, since eastern production generally moves through eastern ports rather than Vancouver.

For canners the specification narrows: uniform size, consistent hydration, skin integrity through the retort and a low incidence of hard seeds. For dry retail and prepared foods the tolerance widens and price moves accordingly. State the application when you enquire, because it changes which grade you should be quoted.

Classification for dry beans turns on species and preparation rather than on the trade name, and canned product sits somewhere else entirely. Tell us the form and the destination and we will confirm the line, the duty position and whether a registration applies, each cited and dated.

MFN duty is the destination's applied general rate for this tariff line. Preferential is the rate under an agreement in force between Canada and that market. Both are customs duty only: destination excise, value-added tax and local levies are additional and are not shown here.
