Black Beans: export from Canada to ASEAN

Black beans are specified on size, colour depth and how well that colour holds through cooking. Colour leaching is the attribute buyers most often fail to specify and most often complain about: a bean that bleeds heavily discolours the surrounding dish, which matters in prepared foods and not at all in a soup.

Canadian production is concentrated in Manitoba and Ontario. As with other beans, eastern origin usually routes through eastern ports, so confirm the province before modelling freight.

The specification points are size grade, moisture, foreign material, defect tolerance and, for canners, hydration consistency and skin integrity through the retort.

Black beans have a smaller Southeast Asian trade than pulses like lentils and peas, so a buyer establishing a programme should expect to contract against a defined crop year rather than assume continuous spot availability.

Beans classify by species and by whether they are shipped dry, prepared or canned, and the three carry different positions. Send the specification and destination and we will confirm the classification and duty with a cited source rather than a plausible-looking figure.
