Dry Dog Food: export from Canada to ASEAN
Premium pet food is one of Canada's strongest consumer-goods export stories into Asia, and it sells on ingredient provenance rather than on price. The buying questions are formulation tier, protein source and inclusion level, grain-free or grain-inclusive, and kibble size and format.
The positioning that works is traceability: Canadian producers can generally document where the protein and the grain came from, and in premium pet retail that documentation is the sales argument. A buyer competing on price against regional manufacture will lose; a buyer selling provenance will not.
Private label is widely available at export-relevant volumes, which suits distributors with existing pet-channel relationships. The trade-off is the usual one between owning a brand and importing one.
Pet food carries its own import requirements that are distinct from human food and frequently stricter on animal-origin ingredients: establishment eligibility and consignment documentation should be confirmed for the specific formulation, since a change of protein source can change the position.
