Pet Food

Premium pet food is one of Canada's strongest consumer-goods export stories into Asia, and it works for a specific reason: the buying decision in premium pet retail is made on ingredient provenance, and Canadian manufacturers can generally document where the protein and the grain came from. That documentation is the sales argument. A buyer competing on price against regional manufacture will lose; a buyer selling traceability will not.

The category divides into dry, wet, treats and the ingredient trade that supplies other manufacturers. Dry is the volume segment and the one where formulation tiers are clearest: grain-free, single-protein, limited-ingredient and freeze-dried inclusions each address a distinct retail positioning.

The regulatory position is where producers most often make a wrong assumption. Pet food carries its own import requirements, separate from human food and frequently stricter on animal-origin ingredients, because the destination is managing animal-health risk rather than food-safety risk alone. A change of protein source can change the position entirely, so eligibility should be confirmed for the specific formulation rather than for the manufacturer in general.

Private label is widely available at export-relevant volumes and suits distributors with existing pet-channel relationships. As elsewhere, the trade-off is between importing a brand and building one.
