Dry Pet Food
Dry food is the volume segment of the pet trade and the one where formulation tiers are clearest: grain-free, single-protein, limited-ingredient and freeze-dried inclusions each address a distinct retail positioning rather than a different quality level.
The buying decision in premium pet retail is made on ingredient provenance, and Canadian manufacturers can generally document where the protein and grain came from. That documentation is the sales argument: a buyer competing on price against regional manufacture will lose.
The regulatory position is the trap. Pet food import requirements are separate from human food and frequently stricter on animal-origin ingredients, and a change of protein source can change eligibility entirely. Confirm for the specific formulation, not the manufacturer.
