Canola Seed: export from Canada to ASEAN

Canola seed is bought by crushers, and the economics turn on oil content and the value of the meal that comes out alongside it. That makes the specification narrow: oil content on a dry basis, moisture, green seed count, and foreign material. Green seed is the attribute most specific to canola and the one that most affects refining cost downstream.

Canada is among the largest canola origins in the world, with production across the prairies and a single annual harvest. Buyers with domestic crush capacity are the natural market for seed; buyers without it should be looking at crude or refined oil and at meal separately, because shipping seed to have it crushed elsewhere rarely survives the freight arithmetic.

The practical guidance for a crusher is to contract on oil content with a clear basis of measurement and an agreed adjustment mechanism, since that is where disputes concentrate. Green seed tolerance should be explicit rather than assumed.

Routing is predominantly through western ports for Asia-Pacific destinations. Confirm vessel or container basis early: canola moves both ways and the cost bases are not comparable.
