Capelin: export from Canada to ASEAN

Capelin is graded first by sex, because roe-bearing females are a distinct and considerably higher-value product than males. A buyer who specifies only capelin will receive whatever the pack run contained, and the price difference is substantial.

For female capelin the roe percentage is the governing specification, and it moves through a narrow seasonal window as the fish mature. Timing within the season therefore determines the grade available, not just the volume.

Male capelin serves other markets, including feed and bait as well as food use.

Specify sex, size grade, roe percentage where relevant, and the freezing method. Canadian supply comes from a quota-managed Atlantic fishery with a short season, so programmes are contracted against the fishery calendar rather than the buying calendar.

Capelin and its roe classify separately, which matters given the price gap between male fish, female fish and extracted roe. State exactly what you are buying so the line we confirm matches the shipment.
