Pea Protein Isolate: export from Canada to ASEAN

Pea protein isolate is a processed ingredient rather than an agricultural commodity, and it should be bought like one. The specification that matters is protein content on a dry basis, solubility, gelation and emulsification behaviour, particle size, and flavour profile, and the last of those is what most often decides whether a formulation works.

Canada has built substantial pea fractionation capacity on the back of its yellow pea crop, so the ingredient is available at scale from a domestic raw material rather than being re-exported. For a formulator, the practical implication is traceability: the pea and the isolate can be documented back through the same supply chain.

Different producers use different extraction routes, and the functional properties differ accordingly. An isolate that performs well in a beverage may perform poorly in an extruded product. Sampling against your actual application, not against a datasheet, is the only reliable qualification method.

Because this is a manufactured ingredient, supply is year-round rather than tied to harvest, and specifications are tighter and more repeatable than for whole pulses. Expect a technical data sheet, and expect to be asked what you are formulating.
